Robin Williams' marquee value notwithstanding, the real star is writer-director Bobcat Goldthwait. Known primarily for his "weird guy" comic persona in "Police Academy" and stand-up, he proves himself to be far more creative than we gave him credit for. That doesn't mean, however, that he succeeds on all levels in this film. The "Dad" of this tale is mostly a pathetic pushover to a cruel and crude son. It's only when Williams enters into a spin-cycle of deceit that things become interesting. But many viewers may not endure the first thirty minutes to get there. B-
